HCPCS E0244 — Raised Toilet Seats Are Not Medicare-Covered

Verified against CMS sources · Updated 2026-10-22

This is the single most misunderstood code in the bathroom-aid range, and getting it wrong costs dealers money.

The code

E0244 — Raised toilet seat. A device that adds height to the toilet seat. It is either fixed height or adjustable. It is either attached to the toilet or unattached, resting on the bowl.

Note the boundary: a raised toilet seat supported by legs resting on the floor is coded as a commode, not as E0244.

The coverage position

CMS's own commode policy article states it plainly:

"A raised toilet seat (E0244) is noncovered."

NCD 280.1 lists Raised Toilet Seats under Deny — a convenience item and hygienic equipment, not primarily medical in nature.

The knock-on effect: a commode chair used as a raised toilet seat, positioned over the toilet, is also non-covered, and the claim requires the GY modifier.

Two related codes, also not covered

  • E0172 — seat lift mechanism placed over or on top of the toilet. Not covered: not primarily medical in nature.
  • E0175 — foot rest for a commode chair. Not covered: not medical in nature.

Why this matters to you as a buyer

If you were planning to lead a reimbursable catalogue with raised toilet seats, the maths does not work — there is no claim to bill. Raised seats are a cash-retail product.

That is not a problem. It is a strategy signal:

If the product is…Then your priority is…
Reimbursed (walker, commode, crutch, cane)Passing a payer audit — codes, documentation, load ratings
Cash-paid (raised seat, bath bench, grab bar)Owning your own brand and your own retail price

For a cash-paid category, selling a brand that is also listed on Amazon at a fixed retail price hands your margin to whoever is cheapest. A private-label raised toilet seat — your logo, your model number, your price — is the version of this product that a dealer can actually build a business on.

Where private label starts

Our raised toilet seat and commode platforms are available with your branding from 50 units per SKU — logo on product, retail carton, user manual and master carton. Details in the private label programme. For the covered alternative, see how our commode line codes as a freestanding bedside commode in the full HCPCS reference.
