HCPCS Codes for Shower Chairs, Transfer Benches and Tub Stools
This is the category where most suppliers get the commercial model wrong.
| Code | Describes |
|---|---|
| E0240 | Bath/shower chair, with or without wheels, any size |
| E0245 | Tub stool or bench |
| E0247 | Transfer bench for tub or toilet, with or without commode opening |
| E0248 | Transfer bench, heavy duty, for tub or toilet |
| E0243 | Toilet rail, each |
| E0246 | Transfer tub rail attachment |
| E0241 | Bath tub wall rail, each — Medicare coverage code M: not covered |
The CMS position you need to know
NCD 280.1 lists Bathtub Seats as denied — a "comfort or convenience item; hygienic equipment; not primarily medical in nature." Bathtub lifts and bed baths are denied on the same basis.
So while E0240 codes a shower chair correctly, the coverage path is not the same clean, automatic claim you get on a walker or a commode. Some payers cover E0240 where the member cannot bathe without being seated; Medicare's national list is far more restrictive.
What that means for how you buy
If a large share of your shower-chair volume is going to consumers paying cash — which, on the Medicare side, it usually is — then price and packaging matter more than the code does. That is a retail business wearing a medical-product label.
Practically, that argues for:
- Your own brand on the product, so the retail price is yours to set and Amazon cannot undercut a brand you do not control
- Wider seats and thicker padding, because the recurring complaint in this category is discomfort
- Carton cube and container loading optimised, because the buyer is paying for freight either way
