HCPCS Codes for Canes — E0100 and E0105
Canes are the simplest code set in the range: two codes, one split.
| Code | Describes |
|---|---|
| E0100 | Cane, includes canes of all materials, adjustable or fixed, with tip |
| E0105 | Cane, quad or three prong, includes canes of all materials, adjustable or fixed, with tips |
| A4637 | Replacement tip, cane, crutch or walker, each |
"All materials" is doing a lot of work
E0100 covers aluminium, steel, wood and carbon fiber at the same code. That means a 120 g carbon fiber cane and a $4 steel cane bill identically.
That is either a problem or an opportunity, depending on how you sell it.
The consequence for dealers
On the reimbursed side, material is invisible to the payer — the code is the code. The margin in canes therefore does not come from the claim. It comes from the retail and cash-pay channel, where a customer can feel the difference in weight.
Which means the sensible play is:
- Reimbursed volume on a standard aluminium cane — compete on supply reliability, not specification
- Cash-retail volume on a genuinely differentiated platform — carbon fiber from 120 g, folding for travel, LED handles, wood-grain premium finishes
Coverage criteria
Canes are covered where the patient's condition impairs ambulation, tied to the Mobility Assistive Equipment criteria. Quad and three-prong canes are covered under E0105.
One coding note
Replacement handgrips and tips bill separately under A4636 and A4637. That is a small recurring-revenue line most suppliers never mention to their dealers.
