HCPCS Codes for Crutches — E0110 Through E0118

Verified against CMS sources · Updated 2026-10-22

Six codes cover the whole crutch category, and four of them pair with a left/right decision you have to get right: pair codes versus single codes.

CodeDescribesUnit
E0110Forearm crutch (elbow crutch), any material, adjustable or fixed, with tips and handgripsPair
E0111Forearm crutch, same, singleEach
E0112Underarm (axillary) crutch, wood, with pads, tips and handgripsPair
E0113Underarm crutch, wood, singleEach
E0114Underarm crutch, other than wood (aluminium, stainless, composite)Pair

E0117Underarm crutch, articulating, spring assistedEach
E0118Crutch substitute, lower leg platform, with or without wheelsEach

Wood versus not-wood is the split that surprises people

E0112 is wood — almost nobody manufactures wood crutches any more. Your aluminium and carbon fiber underarm crutches bill as E0114. If a supplier tells you an aluminium underarm pair is E0112, they are describing a wooden product.

Coverage criteria

Crutches are covered when the beneficiary's condition impairs ambulation — CMS ties this to the Mobility Assistive Equipment criteria. The beneficiary must have a mobility limitation that significantly impairs their ability to perform mobility-related activities of daily living in the home.

The nuance for suppliers

E0116 is the single-code with "with or without shock absorber" language — if you market a shock-absorbing single underarm crutch, that language is why it still bills as E0116 rather than a custom code.

Where the rest of the reference lives

This page is the crutch slice of our full HCPCS dealer reference, which also maps walker and rollator codes E0130–E0150, commodes, canes and the bath-aid codes Medicare does not cover. For the cash-side of the category, see how E0244 raised toilet seats fall outside Medicare coverage — and what that argues for on branding.
